About
Welcome to Ankar's Hoagies 58, a beloved establishment nestled in Chattanooga, TN, where deliciousness meets nostalgia. For over 30 years, this local gem has been a go-to for hearty sandwiches, flavorful salads, and comforting side dishes. Located at 4764 TN-58, this spot combines a rich history with a casual dining experience that appeals to all.
As you step inside, the dated decor might catch your eye, but it is the cleanliness of the space that truly stands out. It’s a welcoming environment where customers can gather and share good times over tasty meals. The ambiance may feel a bit cramped during the lunch rush, yet the friendly staff works efficiently to ensure a seamless dining experience.
When it comes to the menu, the spotlight shines on their gyros and hoagies. Patrons rave about the flavorful gyro, featuring tender meat complemented by grilled onions, tomatoes, and a tangy tzatziki sauce, all wrapped in warm pita bread. While there is room for improvement—like possibly grilling the pita—customers still find themselves returning for this quintessential Greek delight. Ankar’s also offers a mouthwatering chili, rich and meaty, setting the bar high for comfort food.
However, not every dish has been received with applause. Some reviews suggest that enhancements to the meat in dishes like the steak in a sack could elevate the experience—a nod towards the importance of fresh ingredients and preparation. Feedback highlights a desire for more grilled onions to accompany the succulent steak, a simple tweak that could bring back the nostalgic flavors many long for.
Side dishes are not to be overlooked. The onion rings have garnered praise for their crispy texture and generous portioning, making them a perfect companion to any sandwich. Salads offer a lighter option, but customers have expressed a wish for a greater variety of greens to add more excitement to their meals.
In a nutshell, Ankar's Hoagies 58 is a place where tradition meets opportunity—a place that holds a special spot in the hearts of its regulars. Despite some inconsistency in execution, the essence of what makes this restaurant so cherished remains. So whether you’re craving a classic hoagie, a savory gyro, or a simple bowl of chili, Ankar’s is ready to deliver warmth and flavor with each visit. Joining the ranks of loyal patrons means becoming part of a community that appreciates good food and cherished memories.
“ We're on a quest to find the perfect Gyro (Greek sandwich) in Chattanooga and we came closer at Ankar's. The meat is absolutely the most flavorful and tender I've had anywhere. It is served with grilled onions, tomatoes and Tazinki sauce, sprinkled with what I thought may be oregano. It is served in pita bread, which I will say may have been a tad bit better if it were grilled. My husband had the chili, which was thick and loaded with meat. He said the flavor was excellent. The onion rings were very hot and crispy with thick slices of onion. When you enter the building, the first thing you will notice is the decor is dated, but then it will strike you that this is one of the cleanest restaurants you will walk into. We were there just after the height of the lunch rush and the tables were gleaming and floors spotless. I look forward to returning to try one of their hoagies. ”
“ Best it has been in several years!! Great basic sandwich. Awesome onion rings. Quick service! ”
“ This salad is good. Dressing nice and the Service and atmosphere is wonderful. However, my salad without the meat lacked a little more pizazz. I was expecting more green vegetables like spinach or Carrrots or something. Overall this is a great place to eat. Staff was very nice and friendly. Thank you! ”
“ I've been coming here for over 30+years. However lately the owner has health issues and isn't there ask the time like he was back in the day. Now without him around, every visit is a hit or miss place. If they would simply cut up more onions to cook with the meat that goes into a steak in a sack would be great. I'm tired of eating dried out steak in a sack. Chop some onions to cook with that beef and we all can be happy eating there again. ”
“ Food was good and plentiful. The service at the register was fast but I'm guessing with it being the lunch hour the kitchen was swamped, making them a little behind. The restaurant has a good amount of seating but it did feel a little cramped but it didn't feel intrusive. ”
